City attorney Francisco Leal and other Maywood municipal officials have secured Federal Highway Administration funds for street improvements along Slauson Avenue, the most important east-west commercial thoroughfare in the city.
Leal and then-Mayor Thomas Martin met with U.S. Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard in Washington in March 2007 to discuss funding for Slauson Avenue, as well as other public-works project.
Leal is the managing partner of Leal & Trejo in downtown Los Angeles. Royball-Allard represents Maywood and other Southeast Los Angeles communities in Congress.
"The congresswoman was very receptive during our meeting and vowed to fight for monies to be set aside for Maywood in the 2008 Federal Transportation Bill," attorney Leal said. "Thanks to her efforts, street improvements along Slauson Avenue will help to improve traffic flow and trim commute times on one of the city’s busiest streets."
The federal funds will flow through CALTRANS and be awarded to the city of Maywood later this year.
Work on the Slauson Avenue project, which is currently in the final design stages, is expected to begin in fall 2008. Street improvements will take place on Slauson Avenue between the city limits on the west and Atlantic Boulevard on the east.
